Turning 36 and The Before 40 Project

Turning 36 and The Before 40 Project

http://www.nrl.com/I can’t believe that today is my 36th birthday. Just saying that sounds old to me. But the funny thing is, I don’t feel old. I assumed that by the time I was 36 I would be super grown up and mature. But, just ask my wife, I am definitely none of those 🙂

I decided recently that there are several goals I want to achieve before I’m 40. So I created my own little ‘Before I am 40’ project. The project is really a list of goals I want to achieve before I hit the big 4-0. There are currently 16 goals in total. I have split the goals into 5 different sections; Fitness/Body, Experiences, Creative, Career/Finance, and Other.

There are 12 goals in total, but I am sure over the next 4 years I will add to and possibly even drop some of these goals depending on what is important to me as time goes on.

My goals

  • Have a 6 pack
  • Run a 7 minute mile
  • Do 10 unbroken pullups

These goals are important to me for several reasons, the first and probably least important is vanity. I want to look good as I get older. I am not going to lie, having a 6 pack will look awesome. But I also think having a 6 pack is the result of making good choices that will help me be healthy. I want to do a 7 minute mile and do 10 unbroken pull ups mainly because I have never done them before. However, an additional benefit to doing the pull-ups is that I have had a bad back for a couple of years now. In physical therapy, they basically told me it is because I have very weak back muscles. As I strengthen those, and make back strength a priority, I believe and hope that this will translate well to achieving these goals and a pain free life.

  • Visit Australia and NewZealand

I have always wanted to go to Australia and New Zealand. Mainly because I want to go and watch an NRL (Rugby League) game there. But I also think it would be a great experience of a lifetime.

  • Write and publish a fiction novel
  • Take a comedy writing class
  • Take an acting class

I love reading, I love watching movies, and I love creating stories. I feel like I have some significant strengths and talents in all three of the areas above, I have just not pursued and/or improved upon these areas yet. I will do so soon. I have already started work on two fiction novels. I just need to do a better job at planning time for them.

  • Create a side business that earns recurring revenue
  • Pay off my student loans
  • Create a successful personal website/blog

I am tired of being in debt for student loans. I have had a loan in England for my Bachelors degree, and also one in the US for my Masters degree. Thankfully, I have already paid off my English loan. So now we are working on the other one. In order to achieve a lot of my goals, it will take money, so I feel like I need to find a way to earn money in addition to what I earn at B2B CFO.

Also, if you are reading this on my website/blog, you will notice that it is a bit of a mess currently. I need to fix that.

  • Find a career coach/mentor
  • Help mentor others

I feel like I would benefit from a career coach or mentor. I love what I do, but I think I could do it a lot better. I also would like to help others become their best self. (If you want to be my mentor, or know someone that would like my help, reach out and let me know).

My Promise

As the next 4 years roll on, I will keep you updated on my progress. I hope that you all will be my accountability buddies. Congratulate me when I do well, but most importantly, kick my butt when I need it 🙂

What are your goals for the next year?
